The OSO had performed a Symphony—or major work—by Beethoven every season from 2003 to 2013.  Having performed the monumental Ninth Symphony (2012), and epoch-making Eroica Symphony (2013), we took a break from the Master’s works last year but, we are pleased to report, “Beethoven’s Back”!  No composer asks more of you—players, conductor, audience—than Beethoven, and two contrasting works comprise this all-Beethoven offering.  The Piano Concerto No. 3 is from Beethoven’s “early” period, very much a child of the Revolution, composed not long after his move to Vienna from his native Bonn.  The vernal Pastoral Symphony stems from Beethoven’s “middle”, or “poetic”, period: the composer loved nature and he gave descriptive titles to each of the five (yes, five!) movements, and he connects the last three without a pause.  Even in one of his most melodic and genial works, Beethoven was a naughty boy who broke the rules!
